Edward Kugonza was born on 11 October 1944 to Mr Paul Bingwera and Mrs Nyabuzengwa. He grew up in Karindiriiro, Kashangura, where his early experiences helped shape the character, discipline and outlook that would guide him throughout his life.

After completing his studies in the late 1960s, Kugonza moved to Nyakashaka, in what was then Bushenyi District and is now Buhweju District, where he joined a community of tea growers. This move marked an important chapter in his life as he pursued new opportunities, built relationships and established himself in a changing environment. His journey reflected the determination to work, adapt and build a future through personal effort and responsibility.

A Partnership That Built a Family

In the early 1970s, Kugonza reunited with Kyobutungyi, affectionately known as Kayaaga, whom he had met during their youthful years in their ancestral homeland. Their relationship grew into marriage and the beginning of a lifelong family journey. What began as a connection between two young people developed into a partnership shaped by shared responsibilities, family commitments and a common desire to build a future for their children.

Together, Kugonza and Kyobutungyi raised six children: Edgar Barigye, Emanuel Bingana, Paul Ninsiima Ruhanga, also known as Muwanga, Janet Kyomuhendo, Stephen Muzuni, and Rev. Jastina Bashemaire. Their home became the foundation upon which their children grew, learned and developed the values that would guide them through life.

Their family story was built through the everyday responsibilities of marriage and parenthood: providing guidance, supporting one another, making sacrifices and preparing their children to become responsible members of society. Their shared journey represents an important part of the history the Aidah Kugonza Foundation seeks to preserve.

A Supportive Life Partner

Kugonza played an important role in Kyobutungyi’s life and achievements. While she became widely known for her church service, business activities, traditional birth attendant work and contribution to community health, Kugonza remained an important source of support throughout their life together. He supported her activities and stood beside her as she carried the many responsibilities associated with family, work and service to the community.

The story of Kyobutungyi’s achievements is therefore also part of a wider family story. Behind her many responsibilities was a household shaped by partnership, shared commitments and the demands of raising six children. Kugonza’s contribution deserves recognition as part of the family foundation that accompanied her journey.

His role illustrates the importance of partnership in family life. A person’s contribution to the community may be visible to many, while the support that sustains that contribution often takes place within the family. Kugonza’s place beside Kyobutungyi forms an important part of understanding the circumstances and relationships that shaped their shared history.

A Guardian of Family Values

Beyond his support for his wife, Kugonza played an important role in the upbringing of their children. He understood that raising a family involved more than meeting material needs. It also required nurturing character, encouraging responsibility and helping children develop respect for others and a sense of duty towards their family and community.

Together, Kugonza and Kyobutungyi helped establish a family environment in which moral uprightness, respect and responsibility mattered. The values nurtured within their home became part of the foundation on which their children could build their own lives.

Their parenting was an important part of their shared legacy. The influence of parents extends beyond childhood, often continuing through the decisions, relationships and responsibilities of the generations that follow. Kugonza’s contribution to this work deserves recognition alongside Kyobutungyi’s public service.

Their story reminds us that building a family is not simply about providing for material needs. It is also about guiding young people, nurturing character, teaching responsibility and preparing the next generation to make meaningful contributions to society.

A Legacy That Lives Through Generations

Kugonza’s own journey, from his upbringing in Karindiriiro, Kashangura, to his move to Nyakashaka and his involvement in the tea-growing community, reflects a life shaped by work, opportunity and family responsibility. His marriage to Kyobutungyi and their years raising six children gave this journey a wider significance, connecting his personal history to a family whose story continues to be remembered.

As the Aidah Kugonza Foundation honours Kyobutungyi’s legacy, remembering Kugonza alongside her provides a fuller picture of the family behind that legacy. Kyobutungyi’s service to mothers, children, the Church and the wider community remains an important part of her story. Kugonza’s support as her life partner and his contribution to their children’s upbringing form another essential part of their shared history.

Their lives remind us that enduring legacies are often built through partnership, sacrifice and the values parents pass on to their children. Public service and family responsibility may take different forms, but both can contribute to a legacy that continues to influence future generations.

Edward Kugonza is remembered as a pillar in Kyobutungyi’s life, a supportive life partner and a father whose contribution to the upbringing and moral development of their children remains an enduring part of the Kugonza family story. His place in that history deserves to be honoured as the Aidah Kugonza Foundation works to preserve the family’s legacy for generations to come.
